BIOGRAPHY OF RAYMOND H. "BUZZ" FYHRIE
PROFESSIONAL RACE CAR DRIVER
Buzz Fyhrie is the complete road racer. In the ultimate man and machine racecar interaction, Fyhrie combines his skill, perception and judgement with an excellent knowledge of the mechanical and engineering intricacies of a sophisticated racing car. As a driver, racecar chassis setup and racecar engine builder Buzz has done it all. Including competing in every kind of road racing event imaginable. From his first exposure to racing with Go-Karts in 1959 and winning a Karting International National Championship in 1962 with the trophy presentation from Hot Rod Magazine, to a brief try at drag racing, to Autocross & Speed Events, to Midwest Council of Sports Car Club's "A" Production Champion in 1971, to twice racing in the IMSA 24-Hours of Daytona in 1975 & 1976, to finishing 5th in "A" Production at the 1976 SCCA Road Atlanta National Championship Runoffs, to racing in eight seasons of the SCCA TRANS-AM series from 1976 to 1983. All combined it adds up to a resume of more than 45 years of on-track amateur and professional racing experiences. Fyhrie now lives just west of Ft. Lauderdale in Plantation, Florida. Buzz has been involved in road racing for most of his life. In addition to his automobile racing career, Buzz's background includes an earlier career as an Electrical Design Engineer for Bell Telephone Laboratories designing printed circuit boards and integrated circuit chips for telephone Electronic Switching Systems from 1966 to 1970. In 1971 he moved on to a position as Sales Manager for a national upscale auto service and repair franchise called Dan Gurney's Checkpoint America. It later merged into and became Motor Sport Research, a five-store chain of retail and wholesale speed equipment suppliers in the Chicagoland area. Then in 1975 to further complement his racing career Fyhrie became a racing engine builder and also the National Sales Manager for Pro-Motor Engineering. PME was a Chicago area company supplying specialized Chevrolet racing engines to race teams involved with various national racing series including The TRANS-AM Tour, The CAN-AM Series, NASCAR and APBA for Off-Shore Power Boats competing throughout the United States. During his period as an engine builder, Buzz's engines powering customer's boats which won 3 APBA World Offshore Championships down in Key West, Florida and along the way also won 40 National offshore races throughout the country. Pro Motor Engineering, which is now based in Mooresville, NC, has become one of the premier engine builders for independent NASCAR teams with several prominent engine customers over the past few years which have included such teams & drivers as Ricky Rudd, Todd Bodine, Richard Petty, Darrell Waltrip, Jimmy Spencer, etc.
Buzz is President and owner of Performance Marine Associates Insurance Services, Inc. PMA is a Ft. Lauderdale, Florida based retail insurance agency and supplier of marine insurance for yachts and hi-performance vessels on a national basis. In 2005 PMA merged its office with Total Dollar Management Efforts, Inc. of New York, Texas & California. 2006 marks Buzz's 18th year in the marine insurance business. Drawing from his offshore racing background Buzz developed PMA's primary business of insuring high-performance pleasure boats, offshore racing boats, cruiser and large mega-yachts. Buzz's agency currently writes insurance for Cigarettes, Scarabs, Thunderbird Formulas, Fountains and many other types of offshore powerboats including both pleasure and race-only applications. The agency is also a major supplier of extended navigation insurance coverage for clients cruising in the Caribbean, the South Pacific and for worldwide cruising yachts along with insurance coverage of large Motoryachts and Sailboats located throughout the United States.
Buzz's personal interests, in addition to his race car driving, include cruising on his Harley-Davidson motorcycle, traveling, snow skiing, playing his drums to rock-n-roll and jazz music, scuba diving in exotic locations in the Florida Keys and in the Caribbean, sailing on his client's boats in the Caribbean, mountain biking, racquetball, photography, and racing video movie-making. His movies includes a library of most of the auto races that he has participated in, including in-car footage taken during the races along with additional videos shot from around the track and then edited into several multi-camera full-length race videos movies. |
